June 04, 2020
On Thursday, June 4, strong storms with 77+ mph winds and lightning passed through Lubbock, causing extensive damage to electrical equipment throughout the city, including 80 downed poles – a record in recent history. Central and East Lubbock were hit the hardest, and power went out for more than 16,000 customers across the City.
Working through the difficult conditions, LP&L crews restored power to nearly 95% of affected customers in less than 24 hours. With the help of additional contract crews, teams worked non-stop over the course of the next 48 hours to completely repair and restore the system, rebuilding damaged infrastructure and attending to individual outages.
The last storm to cause this much destruction was in June 2013, which took down 118 poles and left nearly 30,000 customers without power.
Once again, the LP&L team rose to the challenge and restored power as safely and efficiently as possible for customers.
