Lubbock Power & Light Crews Leave for Florida to Assist in Hurricane Helene Recovery
Lubbock Power & Light (LP&L) crews are making the journey to Gainesville, Florida to assist with Hurricane Helene recovery efforts. In preparation for the storm, LP&L is sending 13 vehicles and 15 crewmembers.
The LP&L vehicles departed this week from the LP&L Distribution Center to Gainesville, Florida. On Tuesday, they drove to Montgomery, Alabama and will wait there until the storm passes in order to safely reach Gainesville and begin restoration efforts.
The 15 crewmembers making the trip include two construction crews, two service crews, and one mechanic. The call out for assistance comes as result of a mutual service agreement signed by LP&L to assist in these types of disaster recovery events. The last time LP&L was called upon was in response to the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Ian in and around Lakeland, Florida.
Given the disaster declaration issued, all expenses related to LP&L’s efforts in restoring power to residents of Florida will be reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
“Sending crews to assist other cities that have endured large natural disasters is important and part of what we pride ourselves on,” said Joel Ivy, LP&L Chief Administrative Officer. “One day we will be in the position of needing help following a natural disaster and on that day, we trust that our fellow electric utilities will come to our aid. Helping neighbors in need is the right thing to do in all instances.”
