Dusty Rice Claims Victory as LP&L's Apprentice of the Year

The APPA Lineworkers Rodeo annually celebrates the dedication and skill of linemen nationwide. This February, LP&L hosted its own rodeo, serving as a training platform for apprentice linemen like Dusty Rice. Rising through the ranks, Rice, a fourth-year apprentice lineman, emerged victorious in LP&L’s Lineman Rodeo Tryouts with a time of just over 24 minutes. His success extended beyond agility, earning him the title of LP&L's Apprentice of the Year for his technical skill and commitment to safety.

Competing against 18 apprentice linemen, Rice showcased his talents in six challenging events, demonstrating both technical knowledge and dedication to precision and safety. With a score of 573.5 out of 600, Rice's performance highlighted his talent, attention to detail, and remarkable ability to retain knowledge.

Since joining LP&L in 2021, Rice's journey has been marked by growth and learning. From supervised work to progressing through the linemen apprentice training program, he has embraced each challenge with enthusiasm. Reflecting on his favorite event, the Pole Top Rescue, Rice sees it as vital preparation for real-world scenarios.

Rice finds excitement in the demanding nature of his career. "I enjoy working on such a challenging system," he said. "It's rewarding, and I learn something new every day." His sentiments echo the satisfaction that comes from overcoming obstacles and contributing to powering Lubbock's residents.
