Texas is famous for its unpredictable weather, and Lubbock is no exception. From the 16 inches of snow that blanketed the city in the December 1983 blizzard to the 11 inches we saw in the December 2015 storm, Lubbock is no stranger to harsh weather conditions. By following a few simple tips, you can make sure you’re prepared for the next weather event.

Electricity Outage Kit

Create an outage kit with inexpensive items available at your local hardware and grocery store. Make sure the kit is easy to find and access in the event of a partial or full power outage.

  • First aid kit
  • Flashlights

  • Battery-powered radio or television
  • Battery-powered clock
  • Bottled water and nonperishable food

During an Outage

  • Report the outage by sending a text or email with your name, address and a brief description to lightsout@lpandl.com, or call 806-775-2509. Check the Outage Map for the latest updates on restoration efforts.
  • Keep refrigerator or freezer doors closed to maintain the unit's temperature. The USDA says a refrigerator will keep food safely cold for up to four (4) hours if unopened.
  • Limit phone usage. Depending on how widespread the outage is, phone lines and cell phone systems may become overloaded and limit emergency communications.
  • Do not attempt to heat your home with your oven or stove.
